Get ready for National Children’s Gardening Week 2022

This is a week-long campaign to get all children outside, sowing, growing and learning. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, school or business (or most importantly – a child of any age), now’s the time to get stuck into all things gardening. Join us and celebrate the fun that gardens hold for children.  The NCGW supports the wonderful work of the Greenfingers charity, an amazing organisation which provides magical  gardens for children's hospices.

Gardening is good for you – that’s official!

The British Psychological Society reports that gardening improves children’s emotional and mental wellbeing, educational outcomes, and social relationships. It’s not only children who benefit, adults do too: in today's unsettled world, we all could do with some of the peace that gardening brings.

Schools throughout the UK will be getting involved and encouraging pupils to plant and grow. Garden centres across the country will be running special events, check on the NCGW website to find an event near you.

Getting Growing

The last week in May is perfect growing time. Children anywhere in the UK can grow all their favourite veggies and flowers without the worry that cold weather will kill their precious plants or stop their eagerly awaited seeds from germinating.

Plant some seeds and let us know how you get on; turn over that neglected patch in your garden; pot up some herbs to start your very own kitchen garden. Best for children are plants with brightly coloured flowers, tactile leaves, tantalising scents, and fast-growing tasty crops. There’s so much to discover, and we have everything here to help you. Take a look at our handy guide: what to grow with children in May/June.

Send us your pictures to include in our Growers’ Gallery, or keep us updated on our Facebook or Instagram pages.
